Technology In Sport

The Future of Sport

Sport has developed at a fast pace both in term of the fitness, performance and stamina of sportsmen and women but also in the technology used in both measuring and improving sporting achievement and decisions.

We can now see the ‘3rd eye’ or ‘3rd referee’ or ‘Hawkeye’ being used to question human decision in sports such as cricket, rugby, tennis and other popular sports although perhaps the most universal sport of all, football has yet to adopt the this sort of technology much to the dismay of fans (especially when a decision has gone against their team) football managers (when their job may depend on it) and football club owners (when the financial security of their club depends on it). However I can see it playing a huge part in things to come including in football.

Technology and other advances from electronic components suppliers have also allowed for developments in sporting equipment where the slightest thing needs to be recorded. For example fencing: the accuracy of the point of contact is key in close fencing matches. Developments in timing mechanisms allow for measurements to be made more accurately and movement censors promote fair play in races both at the start and finish.

Olympics 2012

Idowu Ready to Handle Olympic Pressure

Phillips Idowu is one of the most recognisable faces preparing to wear the Great Britain shirt at the London 2012 Olympics, and he has been backed to take the gold by the most famous triple-jumper ever to compete for GB, Jonathan Edwards.

The 33-year-old old is the reigning world champion, and is vastly experienced at international competitions, having competed at the top level ever since placing sixth at the Olympic Games of 2000. Idowu will certainly be one to watch, especially for people indulging in online betting at www.betvictor.com.

Idowu has won gold at the World Championships, European Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Indoor and European Indoor events, but the one win that eludes him is the Olympic title. At Beijing in 2008 he won the silver, behind Nelson Évora, and, in an interview after the competition, the Brit seemed really disappointed to only pull out a best of 17.62 metres.

The London 2012 Olympics now looks like Idowu’s last chance to win the Olympic gold, and Edwards, who still holds the triple jump world record with the jump of 18.43 meters he set in 1995, can relate to him, as he only won gold in Sydney at the age of 34, four years after the misery of silver in Atlanta.

Edwards said he thinks Idowu is “ready to deal” with the pressure that comes with competing in front of a passionate Olympic crowd. He expects the Brit to handle the whole situation better than some of his rivals.

“Of all the competitors, he will be the most experienced and the most ready to deal with the challenge of an Olympic final”, he said.

“He has got three other athletes that I think are inherently more talented than him, in Christian Taylor, Will Claye and Teddy Tamgho, but I think it is just how they deal with the pressure on the day. I think Phillips is best placed to deal with that.”

The London 2012 Olympics are taking place right in Idowu’s back-yard, as he grew up in Hackney. He has said that he feels “at home” and “relaxed” in London, despite moving to Birmingham to work with coach, Aston Moore, after the misery of silver at the last Olympics.

At least Idowu won’t have to battle with 2004 Olympic triple jump champion, Christian Olsson, in London, with the 32-year-old having to retire after injuring his foot in the US training for the summer’s Games.
